俄亥俄州位于美国中东部，是五大湖地区的组成部分，别称七叶树州。位于俄亥俄河与伊利湖之间，因俄亥俄河得名 。面积为10.67万平方千米 ，2010年时人口1153万，城市人口占73%。

州内夏天最高温度可达38℃，冬天最低温度可达－29℃，但这样的气温并不多见。加拿大干燥寒冷的气流和墨西哥湾温暖潮湿的气流频繁接触而形成的锋面雨，是降水的主要原因。年降水量965毫米，其中降雪占1/7。

该州位置适中，在横贯东西、纵贯南北的客货运输中占有重要地位。俄亥俄河的货运量比巴拿马运河多一倍。铁路总长度居美国第6位。空运发达，是商业航空线的辐辏之地。俄亥俄大学设有规模宏大的交通运输研究中心。
